Beef Tallow - Versatility and Benefits

So what is beef tallow exactly?

Well, beef tallow is the end product of cooking down or rendering beef fat (usually fat removed from around internal organs or excess body fat). Once gently heated the pure fat (now in liquid form) can be separated from any impurities such as muscle or tendon.

What is it good for?

Beef Tallow can be used for multiple things but most commonly is used in the kitchen or as a skin care enhancer.

  • In the Kitchen: Beef tallow is an ideal fat for cooking or baking as it has high smoke point and a mild neutral flavor with none of the risk associated with seed oils.

  • Skin Care: due to it having similar properties to the natural occurring oil produced by our own skin, beef tallow is found in many natural skin and hygiene care products.

What are the benefits?

Whether consuming beef tallow or applying it topically, there are many characteristics that are said to be beneficial to health and wellness.

  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): Polysaturated Omega-6 fatty acid (yes, technically a trans-fat; but the GOOD kind that is naturally occurring) is suggested to reduce body fat stores and improve immune health

  • Oleic Acid: Monounsaturated Omega-9 fatty acid that has been shown to improve brain and heart health as well as have anti-inflammatory capabilities.

  • Stearic Acid: Saturated fatty acid known for anti-inflammatory properties that could improve heart health and is also known to have moisturizing components making it beneficial for skin application.

  • Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2: These all have higher concentrations in grass fed beef tallow (which Snyder Family Farm is) compared to grain fed beef tallow.

  • High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Polyunsaturated fatty acid known to improve heart health and lower triglyceride levels.

FUN FACT

Beef Tallow rendered correctly and kept in the appropriate air tight container, does not have to be refrigerated!

Of course, refrigeration will increase the longevity of the tallow. And other factors can contribute to risk of spoilage such as moisture, heat, light exposure, and possible contamination once opened.

Overall, beef tallow is a valuable staple that you should surely consider adding to your home!
